Welty graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1929 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Philology. She then returned to Jackson where she worked as a Viktrola records salesperson and as a Junior League reporter for The Memphis Commercial Appeal. In 1931, she enrolled in the Columbia University School of Journalism on a scholarship but left after only one semester to return home to Jackson due to her father’s failing health.
Welty’s first published stories appeared in small magazines such as Manuscript and The Atlantic Monthly in the early 1930s.
