Born in Deep Gap, North Carolina, Watson began playing the guitar at age 15 and soon after started performing locally. He joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was stationed in Okinawa where he played in military bands. After his discharge from the Marines he returned home and continued to play the guitar.
In the early 1950s he met folklorist Ralph Rinzler who introduced him to folk music and encouraged him to start performing professionally. In 1958 Watson made his first recordings for Folkways Records. Over the next few years he recorded several albums for Folkways as well as Vanguard Records. He also toured extensively with his wife, Merle travis.
In 1964 Watson suffered a debilitating injury to his right arm which left him unable to play the guitar for several years. He slowly recovered and began performing again in the late 1960s. In 1971 he resumed recording and released several highly acclaimed albums including Doc Watson on the Mama Guitar and The Essential Doc Waton. He continued to tour and record until his death in 2012.
