On Thursday, March 28th, 2019, New York Mets rookie Pete Alonso made his Major League debut against the St. Louis Cardinals. In his first at-bat, Alonso singled to left field off of Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas. The hit was the first of what would be many in Alonso’s career.
Alonso’s debut was highly anticipated, as the 24-year-old had been one of the best players in spring training. In Grapefruit League play, Alonso hit .351/.425/.691 with six home runs and 18 RBI. His strong performance earned him a spot on the Mets’ Opening Day roster.
Alonso’s debut went largely unnoticed by the national media, as it occurred on the same day that San Francisco Giants superstar outfielder Bryce Harper made his much-anticipated debut with his new team. Harper’s debut generated far more buzz than Alonso’s, as he was the biggest free agent signing of the offseason.
That all changed the following day, when Alonso homered in his second Major League game. The solo shot came off of Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks and tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning. The Mets would go on to lose the game, but Alonso’s home run made him the first player in franchise
