McClurkin was born on November 9th 1959 in rural South Carolina, he was the ninth child born to Annie Mae (née Jordan) and Hugh McFadden Jr. McClurkin’s father Hugh worked manual labor jobs to support the family while his mother stayed home to take care of the children they would eventually have – 11 sons and 1 daughter. As a young child growing up in Greenville County SC, Donnie would often steal away to sing gospel songs at local Baptist churches much to his mother’s chagrin who felt her son should be concentrating on school work instead. Despite this early interest in music it wasn’t until he moved to Brooklyn NY at 14 years old that he began taking singing seriously as part of The Brooklyn All-Stars – a local group who performed R&B cover songs at talent shows around town.
After high school McClurkin joined the Army National Guard but after 6 months he decided that wasn’t for him and returned home to Brooklyn where he eventually found himself working as an ordained minister at evangelist Franklin Lett’s Winner’s Chapel; it was here that McClurkin first began honing his skills as a preacher man. By 24 years old McClurkin had started preaching nationwide which led to him being featured on TBN’s Praise The Lord program in 1992 whereupon he caught the attention of record executive Andraé Crouch who gave him an opportunity to record some demo tracks which eventually led to him signing with Savoy Records – making him one of the biggest names in contemporary Christian music.
Over the next few years McClurkin would release several successful records including Psalms, Hymns & Spirituals (1996), Live In London And More…(1998) which went double platinum selling over 200 thousand copies, Donnie Mcclurklin Gospel (2000), Again (2004) & We All Are One: Live In Detroit (2008).
